With the trade deadline looming, hockey fans await details of a trade involving Columbus Blue Jackets’ captain, Rick Nash. But what if a trade doesn’t take place?
Weeks ago Nash requested a trade and evidently provided the management with a list of 5 teams that he would be willing to be traded to.
With multiple years still remaining on Nash’s contract, it’s not unreasonable to assume at this point that Scott Howson, general manger, isn’t hearing offers that he feels are appropriate in exchange. The organization could potentially wait until the post-season to find a suitable home for Nash and in return acquire something that will benefit the team. As a reminder, Columbus is under no obligation to sacrifice the future of their organization (whatever that may be) to appease the elite forward.
I sincerely hope that the Blue Jackets are not overvaluing him as so many teams seem to do with their players as of late; however, I applaud the organization if they don’t settle for less than they deserve.
Let’s remember, the player signs the contract with the intent on remaining in that organization. The team is not required to accommodate their request for a trade.
So as a result… this is likely to be the most boring trade deadline ever.
Reports this morning from hockey insiders indicate that Mr. Media himself, Brian Burke, continues to push for NHL elite Rick Nash.
It can be argued that Toronto’s forward set isn’t lined with superstar names, but they also aren’t incompetent. Toronto’s goals for (GF) currently sit at 184 goals; this is more than the New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, New Jersey Devils, Winnipeg Jets, and Washington Capitals, all teams that currently sit above Toronto in the standings.
However, if you have ever sat to watch a Leafs game, turned on the highlights, or follow the stats of this team, you’d be hard-pressed to disagree that Toronto is screaming for improved defense and consistent goaltending. If you’re a stats person: goals against currently sits at 190, making their goal differential -6. Simply put, not enough goals are being stopped. Generally, playoff-worthy teams have a positive goal diff, which Toronto isn’t far from.
So the rumours of Nash to Toronto continue. Where’s conversation that will improve the areas that they require the most? The positions that would give them a fighting chance?
Nash is a great acquisition, without a doubt, but if Burke is standing pat on D and hanging his hopes on young offensive d-man, Jake Gardiner, then any intelligent hockey fan knows that even if the Leafs make a push for a playoff position they’ll likely face the New York Rangers and would doubtfully have the legs to go the distance without a more efficient D or a dependable goaltender.
I’m not going to lie, one win in a shootout and I’m struggling to fight the urge to scream “STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS HERE WE COME!” I’m realistic, but feeling a little caught up in the moment.
The Oilers’ kids still have some experience to gain, but it’s hard not to be excited when watching this young team.
Good game Oilers. Great chemistry, especially on the first line. Congratulations on your first goal, RNH.
I really hope Renney pulls back the reigns on Omark’s fancy plays. He’s lucky that his foolish move causing him to miss the net didn’t cost the #Oilers the game. Get on the highlight reel for the right reasons, kid. Save the other crap for practices and YouTube.
With all this Oilers arena controversy, I think it’s a shame that the league can’t help provide financial assistance to teams that NEED a new arena (the Oilers being one of those teams). If the league didn’t have to rely on revenue sharing to support teams like Phoenix, Florida and Columbus, then they’d have profit to provide some assistance to teams that require it. I’m not taking the financial responsibility off of Katz / the City of Edmonton, but it truly is pathetic that the league itself can’t assist them in finding a new home. #yegarena
Kinda fun. I guess I’m a little more retro than many fans. Seem to like more of the current jerseys. I liked very few of the present jerseys with the exception of the Oilers and Canucks.
For the record, Minny’s jerseys are ALL terrible. Yikes.
Not sure how I missed this one a few weeks back. Alex Ovechkin’s odd Mr. Big Commercials return. This one involving a piano.
This afternoon I read a blog by achicksperspective. It was heartbreaking and relatable as I’m sure we all experienced the same emotions.
It’s a shame that they were forced to take the blog down due to unnecessary comments.
The blog was well written and heartfelt. There was clearly no malice intended; however, some people out there are obviously feeling very affected by the events of Wednesday’s crash affecting the KHL team, Lokomotiv.
I hope you all had the opportunity to read it, and if you didn’t, I hope you are able to find it because it’s a must-read.
